Where have I self-regulated?

I can think of a number of areas.

My exercising. I only exercise according to the minimum to achieve my next goal. When there is no goal, the fitness needed is lower, therefore I achieve less, etc.

My expectation for my quiet times has similar cycles. When I am am engaged with ministry., my QT bar is higher

What aspect of your self-image do you think is at play here? In other words what do you believe about yourself that keeps you slipping back when there is no goal or pressure?
